This guy makes cool art. It's sort of offensive, too.

So I know I've mentioned Jason Vivona before, on account of my buying a drawing from him at Sketch Tuesday a couple of months back. Finally took a picture of the drawing, which I have in my hallway at home. I'm looking forward to showing some of Vivona's work in 2010.

self portrait of me at 17, progress shot #2

Here's another progress shot of a self portrait that I've been working on, experimenting with various techniques and elements. Source photo is a picture of me taken just after graduating high school. I've been playing a lot with layering different elements between layers of resin. Hair and leaves are the newest layer. Each of the leaves I cut by hand using a stencil. I'd like to include a few more leaves before covering it with a final layer of resin.

First Sketch for Paris, High Noon

My friend Trent has been working on the manuscript for a novel, Paris, High Noon. He commissioned me to do a few illustrations for his book, and after weeks of procrastination, I'm finally starting on the project. Here is my first moleskine sketch for the book. I don't usually draw cowboys, or people on horses, so I had to turn to a photo of John Wayne as reference. As usual, my Blackberry was not designed to take the best photos in the world.

weekend

Had a great Halloween weekend, though I was really glad to take some time yesterday evening to do another concept sketch in my moleskine and also take some time to rearrange some of my art collection. I have a Jason Vivona drawing that I've been keeping in a tube in anticipation of getting a frame for it, but finally decided to just hang it temporarily in my hallway sans frame. I'll post a picture of it sometime this week. The moleskine sketch is a still from a video featuring Tender Forever.

moleskine sketches

Took some more insanely bad photos of some sketches out of my moleskine. These are concept sketches for paintings (as evidenced by the sketches of Zared and Jessica). Considering that these are the first sketches I've done in maybe four years, I'm pretty happy that I haven't gotten too rusty. Naturally, I'm not claiming that I was any Michelangelo to begin with..... but here they are:

I did this sketch from a photo of two Muslim girls in Dubai that I ripped out of National Geographic. I think the girl on the left is funny because she looks so uncomfortable and awkward in her revealing clothes.

Joshua. I'm currently working on a painting based on this sketch, but it's in too early a stage to start posting progress photos quite yet.

This is from a photo I took of a duo, The Mattson Two, when they played an intimate show at Mollusk, a surf shop in my hood, earlier this year. I've been working with this image for some time using various techniques and materials, and have more or less sent earlier renditions to the fail pile. Here's hoping I'll finally finish working with it.

Jessica. This is actually the second sketch I did using the same photo of her. The first sketch was pretty bad. Probably won't post it.

My brother Daniel. This one kind of sucks, and I want to give it another shot eventually. Facial hair and lowered eyes have always been challenging for me.

Zared. I'm nearly done with the painting I did using this sketch and will probably post some photos of the finished piece within the week.

Progress Shot - Jessica

Another painting I'm working on right now, using an old photo of my friend Jessica, taken when we were in high school. Mixed media (acrylic, paper, spraypaint) on canvas.

it is coming....

Heyo!

Just wanted to say a big ole thanks to everyone that made it out to Blush last night for Petrina's opening. Good times!

Also, wanted to announce the next show... in November, Michael Frank will be taking over Blush with SUBTER SUPTER OS (underneath the mask). Michael approached me with his work some months ago, and I really dug his illustration, as well as his super bright colors and patterns. Michael is another Sketch Tuesdays regular, so be sure to keep a sharp eye out if you head over for the next one on Oct 27.

Transparencies Opens Tonight!!!!

Really amped about this show... First came across Petrina's work at Sketch Tuesday, and loved it so much that I now own two of her drawings, along with having her show this month at Blush.

Come by and check out some of Petrina's awesomely spooky drawings (and buy one, too!)
